I have been always watching videos on Safari on my iPad since my laptop's screen broke, and lately
YouTube has been being a b*tch to me. Everytime I try to watch something, the video is completely black with only the audio playing. Not even the play button would show. I absolutely hate using the App on the iPad because I cannot access some of the features. Has there been some update that I need? I can't because I don't have any access to a PC, nor the update to get the iOS5 without a computer. My iPad is the first version. -------------------- My B/S/T thread

What firmware are you running? 4.x? That may be a part of it. Sadly the app tends to work better than the mobile youtube site.
Edit: Long story short, regardless of firmware: Assuming you've already hard reset the iPad and muddled with the settings; you may need to invest a couple of bucks in Skyfire or Photon or one of the other browser apps that can emulate flash. I know Skyfire has a 'desktop' mode, where it locks into the youtube website proper instead of the mobile iteration. Without being able to look at the iPad itself, that's the best I can do for now. Yeah, since one of the recent updates YouTube doesn't play well in the browser.
However, click the lower right hand corner, of an embedded video (where it says YouTube), this will launch the YouTube app. Normally, this would send you to YouTube's page, but not on the iPad. The app has no image issues, it just loads a tad slower (noticeable on my slow connection). This post has been edited by Kevin S: Feb 19 2012, 07:22 PM -------------------- My FlickR folder...
And yes, I was too lazy to come up with a decent TF related forum name, and just *GASP* used my own. |

If you can get to a computer and update to iOS 5, it'd be well worth your time. It's got a lot of PC-free features like OTA updates so you won't need to find a computer again.

I'm getting the same thing on the Mac browser, so I think it's something to do with YOutube's updates. I reinstalled it and updated it, still no fix.

I have 5 & it has nothing to do with this problem. Actually, I don't think I noticed this problem until I upgraded to 5, in all honesty. -------------------- My FlickR folder...

I didn't say it would fix the problem, I just said it's a good idea if you don't have access to a PC regularly. |

YouTube has this habit of "updating" the Flash file for its player in ways that break certain browsers. I had a period where the video wouldn't buffer while the video was paused, but only in Firefox, so I got in the habit of using Chrome or Internet Explorer to watch YouTube. Sometimes I get the feeling Google has imposed internal company rules against employees using anything other than Chrome, because it seems like there's no excuse for stuff like that.

Sometimes I get the feeling Google has imposed internal company rules against employees using anything other than Chrome, because it seems like there's no excuse for stuff like that. But this is an iPad, so it's not using Flash. A blank video with the audio playing in an H.264 stream is the lowest error condition for the HLS streaming protocol, which is what most video sites use to provide video to the iPad (indeed it's a condition of the app store nowadays if you want to play video over 3G...). It's what happens when the iPad doesn't believe there is sufficient bandwidth between itself and the CDN that YouTube is serving the video off to play the video. The problem that the Quicktime Player in iOS Safari's implementation of HLS is, I'm afraid, buggy jive, and has been for two entire releases of iOS now. But the errors seem to be subtle and latency connected. If you try on a different ISP, does that help? You could try going into settings for Safari, disabling plug-ins, restarting the iPad and then turning plug-ins back on again. Only likely to help if the Quicktime system deamon has crashed, but will only waste your time as worst. Phazer |

Gotta love Apple's walled-garden approach to computing.
