Here is confirmation that the movie is happening, along with a couple other tidbits Been known for awhile that it was on Marvels to-do list, along with Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, the Inhumans, and all the sequels (Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2) Still good to see them talk about it more. |

Still can't believe that it's happening.
(IMG:http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m77au83qtn1qzal6so1_1280.jpg) Somewhat disappointing to see how many people are bewildered by the choice, but I'm looking forward to this above all other Marvel movies. Which, I hope, says quite a lot. |

Given the introduction of the cosmic side of the Marvel movie-verse, Guardians is kind of a no brainer.

I still think this property is too esoteric for your average comic-movie-going audience. Despite whether the film ends up being awesome or not, I fully expect it to fail miserably at the box office.
Ant-Man, too. |

Really hope Phyla makes it for the movie line up, though I kind of doubt it. I'm sure they want to hold off on the Captain Marvel motif for a stand-alone release in the future. Would Phyla as Quasar be too convoluted for a movie plot?

Ant-Man, too. I think it will do decently, if only becuase Marvel Studios is becoming the Pixar of Superhero films. I also think it will do better then Ant-Man since ant-mans rather boring with few of his own good stories; while Guardians is a Superhero Space Opera that is a gateway into introducing other Space based characters. -------------------- ***Signature removed by Staff due to size restrictions. Yeah. I held the belief that it was far too esoteric to even be made into a movie, in the first place. A really solid cast, or at least one with appeal to the general public, might go a long way towards selling this. |

Yes, but Pixar releases aren't as prevalent as the amount of Marvel movies that the studios are trying to make. Seems more like running the property into the ground trying to cash in while the property is still hot. I'd fully expect audiences to burn out on stuff like this (and Ant-Man) than develop some sort of new-found brand-loyalty. And brand-loyalty to Marvel is about the only thing GotG can depend on to try to get butts in the seats since there's really no "brand-recognition" for a property as obscure as GotG.
Also, GotG seems too weird (like Green Lantern once you get into the whole "GL Corps" thing) to really resonate with the average movie-goer. Yes, I keep hearing how awesome GotG is and how great the characters are, blah blah blah, but when I look at that promotional art, I don't feel compelled to see the film. It just looks like it's trying too hard to "rock" and forgetting the fact that all of those characters look really weird. I'm a Marvel fan, and even I have no desire to see this film. If this property managed to be successfully introduced as a TV show or something, where it could build up the quality of backstory/characterisation/plot-lines that comic fans keep hollering about, then I could see it making a mediocre-at-best presence in the cinema (like Serenity), but as is, it's a rare bird (read: Star Wars) that can one-off the intricacy of a Space Opera in a 2 hour film. |

Folks are worrying about nothing.
Iron Man and Thor had NO public fandom/attraction outside of Comic Geeks and folks said the exact some things about them that you'r saying about the Guardians. Turn out an Awesome film, and turn out a film that you've publicly promoted the heck out of as 1) part of a lineage of these epic Marvel films that have been building an unprecedented universe and 2) a prequel to Avengers 2 likely coming the next year. People will GO. Make a good movie. And Make a movie that people know is a vital link to Avengers 2. It will do great. -ZacWilliam, loves these Guardians.read "Conquest: Starlord" mini and the recent Guardians series. Fun stuff. And Make a movie that people know is a vital link to Avengers 2. That's a really key point there. I know a number of people who only bothered with Thor and Hulk because they knew they would have some link to Avengers. Have the Guardians encounter HIGHLIGHT to view: Thanos on his way to Earth and you've got a good hook to grab that audience. Whether or not it's a commercial success in the future can't deter the reality that it's being made now and there's a high probability that I will enjoy it immensely.
Neener. And hey, a line of Guardians of the Galaxy toys! That's pretty neat. Finally, a Gamora. This post has been edited by Strafe: Jul 15 2012, 11:45 AM |

And hey, a line of Guardians of the Galaxy toys! That's pretty neat. Finally, a Gamora. Just one. Shortpacked. Have fun finding her. On subject, the Avengers tie in is what will sell this movie more than anything. The entire world knows the Avengers now. That in itself is telling seeing as the Avengers were not in the public eye at all before all this began. Marvel built up the hype machine and delivered on the hype. That red logo will put asses in seats for even a few years of bad movies. -------------------- |

Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the few Marvel properties I know positively NOTHING about and it is embarassing. They aren't NEW, right? They've been around a long time, right? It's just... weird, that in all the decades I've been reading comics and throughout my childhood when I collected every marvel trading card I could get my mits on... I never encountered any of these guys.
I am completely unfamiliar with them on any level save the one episode of the Avengers cartoon they were just in (and I was surprised to learn that Rocket Racoon could talk). Were they in Infinity Gauntlet? I've read that one but I don't remember them taking part in it if they were. Maaaaaaan, all my friends know me as the go-to comic book dude and they're all gonna ask me about the Guardians of the Galaxy when the movie comes out and I'm not gonna be able to tell them jack. -------------------- Hey, check out one of my sites!

Iron Man and Thor had NO public fandom/attraction outside of Comic Geeks and folks said the exact some things about them that you'r saying about the Guardians. I dunno. I don't read comic books, but I was still reasonably familiar with Iron Man, and even the Marvel version of Thor, long before seeing those movies. I've never even heard of this one at all, though. I'll probably still see it, 'cuz why not, but if I haven't heard of it (as someone who doesn't read comics, but is probably a little more familiar with them than most non-comic readers) then I'd assume most others haven't, either. Even if Iron Man wasn't as well-known to the general public as a hero like Spider-Man or the X-Men, most people have at least still heard of him; and RDJ was probably enough to draw a ton of people to the first film to get hooked, as well. Not sure about this one. This post has been edited by TM2-Megatron: Jul 15 2012, 12:03 PM -------------------- ![]() |

It's just... weird, that in all the decades I've been reading comics and throughout my childhood when I collected every marvel trading card I could get my mits on... I never encountered any of these guys. Yes and no. If you were a fan in the 70s-90s you should know the name at least. If you started collecting after that they only got big again recently. The concept of the Guardians of the Galaxy has been around a long time, but the current team is pretty new. When they were originally introduced way back in the Silver Age the Guardians were a cosmic team from the far future.(30th Century? I forget). They were made up of the last survivors of various Earth colonies that had different "powers" based on their adaptations to their homeworlds. This team had a lot of Avengers connections/crossovers, including playing a big part in the classic Korvak Saga (one of the most famous Silver Age Avengers stories). THAT Guardians of the Galaxy had their own series in the 1990s (Same launch window as the Dan Ketch Ghost Rider and those books.) It was decently fun and pretty popular, especially early on and had a good long run for a book in those years. THIS team of Guardians, set in the modern day Marvel Universe, is a recent formation. Though all the characters are long time existing characters. Rocket Racoon is from the Silver Age Incredible Hulk, Star Lord has a long history (and even a miniseries by Timothy Zahn under his belt) , Groot was a Pre-Marvel Timely Comics Monster and so on. This new team first formed in "Annihilation: Conquest Starlord" miniseries a couple years ago (Great mini) and eventually got their own book. There we're a number of crossovers between that book and the Classic old Guardians team. That book sadly ended too young in the midst of a mess of (pretty decent actually) Cosmic crossover events but it was pretty popular with fans who read it and a good fun read. They and their members won enough popularity in to make a number of appearences recently, especially in The new Avengers Assemble book. -ZacWilliam, hope they go with Starlords modern costume, love the helmet. Never would have happened but I would have been pretty damn happy to see Vance Astro in the screen if only for a sorta link to the New Warriors.

Thanks for that, man. I recall Annihilation being the first time I'd ever heard of the team, so that still means I somehow missed the whole 90s and silver age stuff with the old team somehow.
Shameful. -------------------- Hey, check out one of my sites!

Do you guys not understand that GOTG is just cool as hug? If you're a science fiction fan, you'll eat this jive up. Not only that, but anything Marvel sells these days. I have nothing but faith in this movie. Marvel hasn't hugged up yet, and I don't see them hugging up any time soon.

This is a way easier sell than Thor or Captain America actually. Thor was a space viking, Captain America was injected with science juice that made him super great and he punches nazis named silly things and he gets frozen in ice for 70 years.
All you need to motivate the existence of GOTG is "sci-fi adventure movie", they don't have to mention superheroes since there technically aren't any. Star Wars is still going, Star Wars is weird as hug, why does that guy look like a dog? How do they know what he is saying? Is that guy a fish? Worm the size of a small moon? Why not! All it has to do is to be good. This post has been edited by Weremole: Jul 15 2012, 02:32 PM -------------------- |
