This week marks the release of Shout! Factory's 25h Anniversary DVD release of Tranformers: Generation One season 1. While I'm certain many sites out there will be reviewing the series itself, I'm going to assume that at this point if you're here then you're familiar with the concept of Generation One and I won't have to explain that how in the 80's Hasbro came up with this awesome concept about Transforming robots that fought each other over energy resources to the degree that it depleted their home planet of Cybertron, forcing them to find new energy elsewhere. Or how that upon launching their very first mission to search for this energy outside their home planet, The Heroic Autobots were attacked by the Evil Decepticons causing both ships to crash on a primative organic planet over 4 million years ago. I also won't bore you with the details on how these robotic warriors were awakened on modern earth and in order to blend in with the humans and to disguise themselves from each other they took on alternative forms that resembled earth cars, jets, and even a Sony Walkman from the 1980s.
That said, let's dig in! |

According to his tech spec, Bumblebee was among the first Autobots sent to earth by Optimus Prime. Fitting then, that he be among the first to get a review here at The Allspark. This version of Bumblebee is the 1974 Chevrolet Camaro as seen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and is a Deluxe class figure that retails for around $9.95 US. Like previous incarnations of the character from other series, his primary colors are yellow and black. The yellow in this case is a very subdued real world shade that is close to the original colors available on the 1974 Camaro.

The Allspark was forunate enough this week to obtain an advanced release of the highly anticipated Movie Optimus Prime Leader Class toy. The toy is packaged in robot mode and stands approximately 9 inches (23 cm) tall. The front package includes a "Try Me" feature to highlight the new "Automorph Technology" which, in theory is designed to assist in the ease of transformation. In practical application, though, it is a switch to activate the toy's light and sound features. When release, Prime's chest expands and opens up, revealing his robot head and activates a sound that seems to be a truck engine with laser sounds.
In vehicle mode a button on Prime's shoulder (the truck's roof) makes air horn sounds. The LED lights in his chest and eyes light up when the sounds are activated. Although the box art portrays his LED lights as being blue, the units that are being produced have amber lights. Whether this is an early production run or an absolute change is unknown. |
